Hey guys, got bored at work and thought I'd post up a bunch of nice and nifty programs for cleaning up an infected computer.

CCleaner for getting rid of Temporary Files and invalid registry entries
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Killbox for getting rid of Multiple User Account's Temporary Files and deleting stubborn files or processes as well
http://killbox.net/

Hijackthis - Gets rid of stubborn Internet Hijacks and redirects ***Use with Caution as deletion of the wrong files can result in needing to reload windows***
http://test.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis

Super Anti-Spyware - Free Program that will scan your computer for spyware threats. Also has tools to reset windows policies and restrictions to defaults
http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html?part=dl-6281995&subj=dl&tag=button

Spybot Search and Destroy - Free Program that will sometimes find things that Super Anti-Spyware and Malwarebytes won't.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Malwarebytes - By far one of the best free malware/spyware removal program on the net that's free to use
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Avira Anti-virus - A free antivirus program that does a decent job of protecting you. If your just wanting to cleanup a computer this is a great one to use as you don't have to uninstall your other anti-virus programs to install this one. This will install and work in conjunction with others that are out there. I don't recommend using more than 1 antivirus on a computer for a prolonged period of time though as it will tend to slow down the computer.
http://www.free-av.de/en/trialpay_download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

AVG Free Edition - AVG is probably the most recognized free antivirus on the web today. It does a great job for everyday protection as well as being able to find bugs if you get infected.
http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free

Microsoft Security Essentials - In my opinion this antivirus/antispyware has replaced AVG Free Edition. It is a much smaller installation on the computer so it tends to use very little system resources. It also does a great job for protection as well. I've switched to this antivirus after using the avg program for years and I'm glad I did. No infections to this date as of yet since installing it. Only setback is if you've got an illegal copy of windows it may not install as it does check to see if your windows installation is geniune.

Combofix - This is a great free utility that will get rid of those extremely pesky or stubborn bugs out there that like to disable your computer, pop up stupid warnings your infected, and more. It's simple to use and usually pretty quick.
http://www.combofix.org/

Unhackme - A free trial utility that will often find hidden rootkits and other infections on the computer that your antivirus/antispyware program can't. Also works very well for when infections disable you from running .exe's as this is installed using a different type of file. **CAUTION** - Using this program you can delete files that some programs or windows may need to run properly.

Other Useful Items

Here are a few commands you can type into the command prompt for testing and repair. To get to the command prompt you can do it in a few ways. One, hold down the windows key on your keyboard (the key with the microsoft logo on it) and then press the letter r. When the run dialog box comes up type in the letters CMD and hit ENTER. Or you can also navigate to the command prompt by clicking on START --> All Programs/Programs depending upon OS --> ACCESSORIES --> COMMAND PROMPT

chkdsk c: /r - Checks the file system for errors along with locating bad sectors and recovering readable information

sfc.exe /scannow - Scans integrity of all protected system files and repairs files' problems if there are any ***Good to run this command after removing infections as they can corrupt windows files*** BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR WINDOWS CD IN THE DRIVE BECAUSE IF IT FINDS ANYTHING NEEDING TO BE REPAIRED THE COMMAND WILL LOOK FOR THE CD FOR THE FILE(S) IT MAY NEED.

ping - allows you to test connectivity to a host over the network. Example : "ping 192.168.1.1" If you get a reply then you have inter-connectivity between the 2 networked devices

ipconfig /all - displays the network address information for all network adapters in the computer. Useful for network connectivity issues or trying to find the ip address of the computer the command was issued from along with the ip scheme the modem/router is using.

OTHER

Auslogics Disk Defrag - A Fast and powerful free defragmenting program. Seems to do a much faster and better job than windows defragmenter
http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/

Auslogics Registry Defrag - Another utility from Auslogics that's good at defragmenting the registry in your computer. This will help the computer to perform a bit faster.
http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defrag/

Defraggler - Another Disk Defragmentation program out there. This one does take quite a while to run but in return it is also very thorough.
http://www.piriform.com/defraggler/download

Ninite - This is a website that will make you a custom installer based on what they have to select from. All you do is select what programs you want the Ninite installer to install on your computer for you then it generates an file you download and run. It will perform unatteneded installations of the programs greatly reducing the time it takes for you to install them.

What is a good (free) program to use to clean the registry? I have one on my laptop that a friend installed a few years ago, but I know the wife's is in bad need of cleaning.

Update:

Combofix now works on 64-bit operating systems as well as 32-bit.

Hitman Pro - Free Time-trial based program that is very good at getting rid of nasty rootkit infections as well as other stubborn viruses.
http://www.surfright.nl/en

TDSS Killer - Another rootkit removal software from the makers of Kaspersky Antivirus. Lately there have been a lot of viruses that love hijacking your searches from google, yahoo, etc. This will find those bugs, most commonly the TDL4 rootkit, and remove them for free.
http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208280684

Glary Utilities - They have both a free and paid version of this program. It is an optimization program that goes through and helps speed up your computer by checking for temp files, registry errors, and other things.
